GRA No Longer Responsible For Property Tax Collection- Govt

The Minister for Local Government, Religious and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, has delegated the collection of property tax to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

This means that the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) will no longer be responsible for the collection.

According to the Information Service Department, this function will return to MMDAs to strengthen fiscal decentralization and improve local revenue mobilization.

The announcement was made by the Minister during the Urban Property Tax Workshop in Accra.

The Minister noted that centralizing property tax collection had limited the Internally Generated Funds (IGF) of MMDAs.

To support local development, the government also plans to reintroduce municipal bonds and enact a Local Government Borrowing Act.

Stakeholders were encouraged to adopt digital tools for efficient tax administration and ensure improved revenue leads to better public services.
