GPRTU Announces 15% Transport Fares Reduction

The Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% transport fare reduction in response to the drop in petroleum products at the pump.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, made this known after a series of meetings with the Transport Ministry.

The new prices will take effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025.
“The fuel price has dropped by, let’s say, 18%. So the tradition we do is that we divide it by 3 and use one-third of it. But we decided on 15% based on fuel price. We are also hopeful that our brothers in the spare parts business will reduce their prices as well,” he stated in an interview on TV3.

He urged members of the GPRTU across the country to comply with the reduction, as they have always complied with increments.

“We are in Ghana and the laws of the land must be abided by every citizen. Each time we increase lorry fares, everybody patronises the increment, so shall it be, if there is a reduction, everybody should be prepared to comply.

“Anybody who decides not to comply, the passengers should report to the nearest police. We are not saying they should be beaten, we are pleading, nobody should be beaten, but they should be handed over to the nearest police, they come across.”

He noted that the reduction was decided despite the resistance of spare parts dealers and other stakeholders.

“The lubricants are still at where they are, documentations like permits, taxes and DVLA, what we’ve been paying, are still at where they are, but we consider as our contribution towards resetting of Ghana, and we came up with this initiative.”
