Govt to Issue Its ‘Definitive’ Position After Receiving Asantehene’s Bawku Mediation Report

The Mahama-led administration will issue its “definitive” position on the report presented by the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, after mediating the conflict between the Kusasis and Mamprusis over Bawku in a few hours.
Receiving the report on December 16, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama said he was pleased that the mediation had concluded.
He noted that the report would be scrutinised before the official communication from the government.
“I can assure him that the government will look at this report and, within the next 24 hours, the government will state its definitive position on the report.”
Meanwhile, President Mahama expressed anticipation for the reconciliation phase of the process, which will be spearheaded by a Committee made up of key institutional bodies.
He further conveyed his indebtedness to His Majesty, saying he had done a “very honourable” job for the country.
He deems the King a national asset.
“He {Asantehene} has shown that he does not belong to Ashanti alone. He is a national asset, and so is Nana, we thank you so much.”
Highlighting the implications of the conflict, President Mahama said all national security reports he receives emphasise the need to settle the issue of Bawku urgently.
He stated that it had become necessary to safeguard the whole Northern border from the terrorists and brutes that are operating in Burkina Faso.
He also affirmed that the conflict had derailed the potential of Bawku city as a centre of trade, with doctors, teachers refusing posting, and civil servants leaving.
In addition, he said the Ghana National Service Authority has suspended posting to Bawku because it cannot guarantee the safety of personnel.
