Gov’t Raises NSS Allowance To GHC715.57
The Akufo-Addo-led government has approved a raise in the allowances of National Service Personnel (NSP) for the first time since 2016.
It was last increased while former President John Dramani Mahama was preparing to leave office in December 2016 from GH¢350 to GH¢549.04 and remained there until an upward adjustment was announced yesterday by the NSS secretariat in a press statement.
The allowance is now pegged at GHC715.57.
The statement dated July 23 and signed by the Acting Director of Corporate Affairs, Ambrose Entsiwa noted that the increase was approved by the government in a letter dated July 18 after consistent engagements with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Ministry of Finance.
“In effect, all National Service Personnel who are currently in active service are entitled to arrears for the difference in the upward adjustment from January 2023 and would be paid accordingly,” it said.
It further urged the personnel to exercise patience over delayed payment of their allowances.
The news was received with mixed reactions as a section thought the amount could have been raised a bit higher.
“Why not ghc1000,” one commented with another raising concerns that “Transportation will consume all”
Others think the move is aimed at influencing the 2024 general election.
“Election things.” Another said, “For the sake of 2024 election let’s give them this peanut to rejoice over it.”
A section commended the government commenting, “Good move,” “Good development,” “This was long overdue”.
