Gov’t Pays GHC50M to WAEC to Conduct Examinations
The government of Ghana has released GHC50 million to settle some of its debt to the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
It comes as the examination board is conducting this year’s West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across the country.
The payment was announced by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, Mr Kwasi Kwarteng in a press statement dated Thursday, August 29, 2024.
“The Ministry of Education is pleased to announce the release of Fifty million (GHC 50 million) to the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to support the conduct of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).”
According to him, the disbursement reaffirms the Government’s commitment to fulfilling its financial obligations to WAEC and ensuring that the Council’s operations continue without interruption.
He furthered, “We wish to reassure all stakeholders, especially students, parents, guardians, and the general public, of our dedication to sustaining an environment that fosters seamless, efficient, and high-quality education for all Ghanaian students.”
Prior to the 2024 BECE which took place in July, concerns were raised about the government’s GH¢95.83 million debt to the Council. There were concerns that the Council may not have the capacity to conduct both national examinations due to the huge debt.
However, early in July, WAEC confirmed a payment of GHC55 million by the government.
