Ghana Restarts Process to Establish National Airline

Ghana has restarted the process for the establishment of a National Airline, with a Task Force inaugurated to spearhead the project, the Minister for Transport has announced.
The Minister made this known at the opening of the first edition of the Ministry’s Strategic Review Workshop, where he outlined key interventions being rolled out across the aviation, maritime, road transport, and railway sectors.
“This workshop gives us the opportunity to review, rethink, and reset the transport sector in line with the President’s vision of ‘Building the Ghana We Want Together,’” he said.
Interventions
Beyond the national carrier, the Minister highlighted several initiatives already underway:
* Commissioning of the Advanced Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) system to improve safety and security.
* Repurposing Terminal 2 at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for both domestic and international passengers.
* Ongoing construction of a new Air Traffic Control Tower to strengthen communication with pilots.
* Extension of the runway at Prempeh Agyemang I International Airport to accommodate medium-sized aircraft.
* Commencement of plans to construct a new airport in Bolgatanga.
Maritime, Road, and Railway Updates
Maritime: Full 24-hour operations have commenced at Tema and Takoradi Ports, while new regulations are being developed to tighten oversight in the shipping industry. An Expression of Interest has also been launched for the development of a Coastal Water Transport System.
Road Transport: The Ministry has successfully negotiated a 15% reduction in public transport fares, commissioned two new DVLA offices at Adenta and Bole, cleared a backlog of over 266,000 driver’s license cards, and registered 7,193 earth-moving equipment.
Railways: Work has resumed on sections of the Western Railway Line from Manso to Huni Valley, while a new committee has been constituted to oversee the Tema-Mpakadan line and related projects.
Pushing for Inclusivity and Innovation
The Minister underscored the government’s commitment to building an inclusive transport system, particularly for persons with disabilities.
He urged transport operators to integrate boarding ramps and other accessibility features, and tasked the National Road Safety Authority to intensify awareness among service providers.
He further announced that the Ministry will unveil the Transport and Logistics Fair on Friday, August 22, 2025, to showcase transport innovations, highlight investment-ready projects, and inspire new policy directions.
Leadership and Collaboration
At the event, the Minister also introduced the newly appointed Deputy Minister for Transport, Hon. Dorcas Affo-Toffey, urging stakeholders to extend their support to her as the Ministry pursues its agenda.
“As leaders, we are expected to play our roles and position the sector as the engine of growth, driving development in other sectors of the economy,” the Minister emphasized.
The Strategic Review Workshop is expected to produce actionable strategies to strengthen Ghana’s transport system and cement the country’s leadership in connectivity, logistics, and mobility within West Africa.
