Govt Commits to Sustaining Free Dialysis Programme

The new government has made commitments to sustaining the free dialysis programme under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The initiative introduced by the previous government aligns with the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, (Mahama Cares) initiative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government aimed at supporting the treatment of chronic illnesses.
Speaking at the Tamale Teaching Hospital’s 2024 Annual Performance Review Meeting themed “Transforming Service Delivery through Professional Excellence and Ethical Practice,” the Deputy Chief Executive of Operations of the Authority, Dr Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, reassured the beneficiaries of its sustainability.
“The Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) was launched on Wednesday. It will adopt a comprehensive approach to addressing chronic illnesses. For individuals with hypertension, diabetes, and those requiring interventions like dialysis, a visionary policy is necessary to support them in mitigating the devastating financial consequences of their conditions.”
“With this move, I am certain that there will be no interruption to the services that are being rendered by accredited facilities.”
The erstwhile New Patriotic Party government introduced a free dialysis service for all kidney patients in December 2024 after a six-month pilot programme in all NHIS-credentialed health facilities.
Announcing the enrolment on December 2, the NHIA said it was starting in 20 out of the 40 health facilities across the country.
They are Hart Adventist Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Firstcare Hospital, Holy Family Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, Eastern Regional Hospital, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, 37 Military Hospital, Accra Newtown Islamic Hospital, Ghana Police Hospital, Trust Hospital Premium Centre, Ridge Regional, International Maritime Hospital, Tamale Teaching Hospital, Bolgatanga Regional Hospital, Ho teaching Hospital, Volta Regional Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital and Takoradi Hospital.
