Govt Approves Limited Recruitment for Public Universities

The government has approved a limited recruitment exercise for public universities to fill vacancies.

A total of 1,200 faculty members are expected to be employed, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced on April 1, 2026, during a press conference.

“Many of our institutions of higher learning, the universities, have not had the opportunity to replace staff, including members of faculty.

“Part of the approval from the Finance Ministry, we will allow all tertiary institutions, some limited recruitment to beef up their faculties and to renew their faculties as we continue to work.”

According to him, the estimated quota for each institution will be duly communicated by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).

The Minister also disclosed discussions around running an automatic recruitment system for these institutions to replace existing posts.

“In my view, we should have automaticity, that is, automatic replacement; that is, if a lecturer is exiting, it should be possible because provision has been made for the compensation and other facilities of the persons to be replaced. We are still discussing that with the Minister of Finance, and as and when we are ready, we will let you know.”
