Govt Approves and Funds Interim Procurement of Essential Food Items By SHSs

The government has granted short-term approval for the heads of senior high schools (SHSs) to directly undertake the procurement of essential food items to feed students.

The required amount to undertake this interim measure for the next two weeks has also been released, a letter by the Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Stephen Kwaku Owusu addressed to all Regional Directors of Education confirmed.

This, it said, is aimed at improving feeding in the various schools.

“Management is pleased to officially communicate the granting of approval by the Office of the President to Heads of Public Senior High Schools to procure essential food items needed to feed students for a period of two (2) weeks (20th January – 3rd February 2025).”

“Consequently, disbursement based on student enrollment and approved cost of feeding each student per day has been made to the schools. The approved rate is Seven Cedis Fifty Pesewas (GHC7,50) and Three Cedis (GHC3.00) for boarding and day students respectively. Each school will utilize these funds to procure essential food items available in their localities for the two weeks.”

Meanwhile, it directed all Heads of purely Day Schools to engage the services of private caterers to provide meals to students at the approved rate.
