Government Commits to Supporting China City Mall Fire Victims

The government of Ghana has announced a support package for persons affected by China City Mall fire.

The commitment was made when the Deputy Director-General of Operations, of the National Disaster Management Organisation, Hon. Teddy Safori Addi, visited the scene in the aftermath.

“He assured affected persons of government’s support,” the Organisation reported in a Facebook post on Sunday.

NADMO also plans to strengthen its collaboration with the Fire Service, and other agencies to intensify fire-safety education across markets, malls, and households.

The fire broke out on the afternoon of October 30 in a warehouse on the first floor before spreading to other parts of the mall, preliminary GNFS investigations found.

Occupants initiated emergency evacuation protocols and made initial firefighting attempts using portable extinguishers, but were unsuccessful.

No injury or fatality was recorded; however, portions of the building have caved in due to the intensity of the fire and the large chain of fuel load involved.

“Severe spalling and cracks are visible on the walls, with exposed reinforcement indicating compromised stability and structural integrity of the building,” the the Ghana National Fire Service reported.

The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
