GHS Recommits to Promoting Dignity, Well-being of Aged
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has recommitted to promoting and safeguarding the dignity, well-being, and rights of older persons as the world marks United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP).
This, it said, is being done through deliberate legal reform, targeted advocacy, expanded awareness and strengthening institutional frameworks.
“Ghana continues its journey toward an inclusive society where older citizens are recognised, respected, supported and engaged,” it said in a statement on Wednesday, October 1.
This year’s commemoration is under the theme: “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being, Our Rights”.
The GHS believes that the theme underscores its view that older persons should be seen not simply as beneficiaries of services but as active agents within their families, communities, and broader society.
The 2025 UNIDO aims at:
I. Raising Awareness about the rights, contributions and challenges of older persons in Ghana.
2. Advocating for Older Persons’ Rights and Services, including equitable access to healthcare, social protection, pensions, legal support and opportunities for active participation in society.
3. Promoting Intergenerational Dialogue by fostering exchanges across age groups through mentorship, storytelling, joint community initiatives and shared experiences.
4. Supporting Age-Friendly Environments that ensure dignity, independence, mobility and well-being.
5. Celebrating Contributions of older persons’ knowledge and skills, volunteerism, experiences, continuing roles in the community, and leadership to Ghanaian society.
