GHS Issues Health Alert on Meningitis

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has issued a health alert on the potential outbreak of Meningitis this dry season.

It warned that the disease is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition as it causes inflammation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.

“It can spread rapidly, especially in crowded living conditions, and requires early detection and prompt medical care to prevent severe complications or death.”

It outlined common Signs and Symptoms to include severe headache; stiff neck or pain when bending the neck forward; nausea and vomiting; confusion, drowsiness, or difficulty waking; convulsions or seizures.

In infants, the disease causes a bulging fontanelle, persistent crying and refusal to feed.

It noted that children under five years, adolescents and young adults, the elderly, people living in overcrowded conditions and individuals with weakened immune systems are most at risk.

The public has been advised to avoid overcrowded and poorly ventilated spaces; practise good respiratory hygiene (cover mouth when coughing or sneezing); wash hands regularly with soap and water; Seek early medical care when symptoms appear; ensure routine immunisations are up to date; and frequent intake of fluids /water for hydration.

“Any person experiencing symptoms or suspecting a case of meningitis should report immediately to the nearest health facility. Please note that early reporting and treatment save lives.”

“The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service assure the public that surveillance systems have been strengthened, and health facilities are on alert to respond promptly to early suspected cases.”
