GHS Announces COVID Vaccination
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has fallen back on the COVID-19 vaccination drive following a recent upscale in infections in parts of the country.
The Director of Public Health at the GHS, Dr Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, said the round will begin on May 4 and end on May 10 across the country.
Encouraging Ghanaians to avail for the exercise, he said, “We are observing a rise in cases reported in parts of Accra and several other regions. This underscores the urgent need for vaccination among Ghanaians.”
This will not be the only COVID vaccination round this year as he announced plans for at least five.
“We intend to conduct four or five vaccination campaigns before the year’s end. The goal is to achieve the necessary population immunity that will help minimize the risk of infection within the country.”
Five out of the sixteen regions in the country currently have active cases with the Greater Accra Region topping with 16 infections.
Volta, Savannah and Eastern Regions have one case each while the Northern Region has two as of April 7, 2024.
As of December 31, 2023, a total of 28,515,854 vaccines had been administered across the country, data from the GHS suggests.
