GHC1.5 Billion Budget for Agric Sector Woefully Inadequate – Hon Osei Dapaah

The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South West, Hon. Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah, has criticized the government’s GH¢1.5 billion budget allocation to the agriculture sector, describing it as woefully inadequate to drive meaningful growth and self-sufficiency.

Speaking to Opemsuo Radio’s parliamentary correspondent, Nana Kwaku Boffah, the MP stressed that Ghana’s vast and fertile lands remain underutilized, even as the country continues to import basic agricultural produce such as tomatoes and onions from neighbouring countries like Burkina Faso.

“We shouldn’t be importing tomatoes and onions from Burkina Faso when we have the capacity to grow them here,” Hon. Dapaah stated.

“GH¢1.5 billion is simply not enough to empower Ghanaians to venture into farming and create jobs.”

He argued that a more substantial investment in agriculture would help reduce unemployment, enhance food security, and lessen dependence on public sector jobs.

Hon. Dapaah therefore urged the government to reconsider its budgetary priorities and allocate more resources to agriculture as a critical step toward economic independence and rural development.
