Ghana’s Tuna Industry Receives Global Certification

Ghana’s Tuna Industry has received certification by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), a globally recognised standard for sustainable fishing.

The science-based award affirms effective stock management, minimal environmental impact, and strong governance systems in Ghana.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, when the Ghana Tuna Association met with the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, at the Ministry in Accra.

Describing the achievement as a significant step forward, the Minister said the MSC certification strengthens Ghana’s commitment to responsible fisheries management and positions the country’s tuna industry competitively within the global sustainable seafood market.

According to her, the milestone reflects years of collaboration between industry players, regulators, and technical partners, including improved data collection, observer coverage, responsible Fish Aggregating Device (FAD) management, and enhanced monitoring and compliance systems.

She congratulated the Ghana Tuna Association and acknowledged the leadership of Pioneer Food Cannery in driving the certification process.

The Ministry and the Fisheries Commission reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the certification standards, stressing that sustainability is an ongoing responsibility.

The Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Prof. Benjamin Campion, said the certification will make Ghanaian tuna more attractive on the international market, as global consumers increasingly demand sustainably harvested seafood.

He urged the media and the public to support responsible fishing practices and help eliminate unsustainable activities in the sector.

To the Association, the MSC certification will not only boost Ghana’s tuna exports but also drive broader reforms across the country’s fisheries sector.
