Ghanaian Language Now “Elective” In BECE
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has taken a u-turn on the Ghanaian languages in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), making it an elective subject instead of the earlier advertised optional choice.
This was confirmed in a letter on the registration of courses for the exam set to begin on Monday, July 8 and end on Friday, July 12.
It had been earlier announced that Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English Language, Creative Arts, Computing, Career Technology and Religious and Moral Education (RME) will be sat as compulsory subjects for candidates while Arabic, French or any of the 11 Ghanaian Languages will be optional.
The announcement drew public backlash forcing the GES to withdraw its stance.
Per their recent release, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English Language, Creative Arts, Career Technology and Religious and Moral Education (RME) are mandatory subjects while the Ghanaian Languages will be an elective subject for all candidates.
Meanwhile, candidates will have to choose between Computing, Arabic and French as optional subjects.
“Regional Directors are by this letter requested to communicate the above to their respective Metro/Municipal/District Directors of education for compliance.”
Ghanaian languages sat in BECE include Akuapem Twi, Asante Twi, Dagaare, Dagbani, Dangme, Ewe, Fante, Ga, Gonja, Kasem and Nzema.
