Ghana Water Company Shuts Bonsa Headworks Over Galamsey
The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced the shutdown of the Bonsa Headworks that produced 75% of potable water in the Tarkwa Township.
A memo by the Tarkwa District Manager for GWCL, Wisdom Doe Akoto announced the move.
According to him, the decision was necessitated by illegal mining activities massively ongoing in River Bonsa in the Western Region which is polluting the source of water.
“We are sorry to announce that Bonsa Headwork that produced 75% of potable water to Tarkwa Township and its environs have been shut down due to massive Galamsey activities on river Bonsa making it difficult to abstract for treatment.”
He noted that all measures had been exhausted to no avail, hence the shutdown
He however noted that the water is still being monitored.
“The river is still being monitored for acceptable parameters to enable us to restart production, and until then, the plant remains closed. We promise to update the public for any development with regards to the current situation.”
This move, will impact water supply to the entire town, creating scarcity.
