Ghana to Export Nurses to Barbados
Ghana will soon send a new batch of nurses to island country Barbados.
This was confirmed in a press statement by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) announcing rectification of anomaly with the Barbados recruitment portal.
“The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the General Public that, the anomaly on the portal for the recruitment of Ghanaian Nurses to Barbados has been rectified.”
The portal opened on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 2:00pm.
“Prospective applicants are requested to formally access the form on hr.moh.gov.gh and click on Barbados application to follow the instructions to apply. The public is kindly informed that, the Ministry of Health does not have an alternative,” it added.
The deadline for the application is Thursday, August 22, 2024.
The government has come under backlash from a section of the public for the move as they argue that some health facilities are struggling with limited staff.
The Executive Director of Africa Education Watch (EDUWATCH), Mr Kofi Asare in a post on Facebook ironically said, “GoG now recruiting Ghanaian nurses for Barbados when many health facilities in Ghana lack adequate personnel. Congrats!”
Ghana has entered a bilateral agreement with Barbados to send nurses to supplement their inadequate workers. The deal was reached after a plea by Prime Minister Mia Amor Motley during a visit in 2019 by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
In a Facebook post in 2022 when Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia attended the AfriCaribbean Trade and Investment Forum in Barbados, he affirmed the country’s commitment to continue honouring the deal.
“The government of Ghana will continue to support Barbados with the supply of nurses as per the agreement.”
