Ghana to Approach Burkina Faso over Tomato Export Ban

The government of Ghana has announced intentions to engage the government of Burkina Faso over its tomato export ban.
In a statement, Ghana’s Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry said it seeks to address concerns surrounding the ban and chart a mutually beneficial way forward for both countries.
While urging tomato traders in Ghana to exercise restraint, the government assured its commitment to working with stakeholders to boost local tomato production under the “Feed Ghana” and “Feed the Industry” programmes to meet demand on the domestic market.
On March 16, 2026, Burkina Faso announced a ban on the export of fresh tomatoes alongside a suspension of Special Export Authorisations (ASE) issuance until further notice.
The government directed economic operators holding valid export authorisations for fresh tomatoes to use the next two weeks to complete their export procedures, after which the authorisations will be null and void.
It emphasised its resolution to enforce the directive, noting that offenders will be sanctioned in accordance with the regulations in force.
“Any goods seized in violation of this measure will be redistributed, free of charge, to industrial units processing fresh tomatoes established under the framework of popular shareholding initiatives,” a translated version of the release communicated.
