Ghana Ranks 41st In English Proficiency

Ghana has been ranked 41st globally and moderately proficient in the English Language in the latest World English Proficiency Index (EPI).

The West African Country also made it among the first five African countries that are proficient in the language beginning with South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda.

Ghana’s new position is an improvement compared to last year’s index at 42nd at the moderate level.

The ranking which was based on test results of 2.1m adults in 111 countries and regions found the Netherlands as the world’s most proficient country.

The ranking groups countries into Very high proficiency, High proficiency, Moderate proficiency, Low Proficiency and Very low proficiency.

This year, 13 countries were ranked as Very high proficiency level; 18 as High proficiency; 29 as Moderate proficiency; 27 as Low Proficiency; and 24 as Very low proficiency.

This edition of the EF EPI is based on test data from more than 2,100,000 test takers around the world who took the EF Standard English Test (EF SET) or one of our English placement tests in 2021.

The EF SET is an online, adaptive English test of reading and listening skills.

It is a standardized, objectively scored test designed to classify test takers’ language abilities into one of the six levels established by the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).
