Ghana Initiates Talks to Take Possession of Kwame Nkrumah’s Residence in Guinea

Ghana has initiated diplomatic negotiations with authorities in Guinea to take possession of a residence that sheltered Kwame Nkrumah in the latter parts of his lifetime following his overthrow.
According to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the talks were initiated on the instructions of President John Mahama.
“We have initiated negotiations with the Sékou Touré family of Guinea to allow Ghana take possession of the house Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah lived and worked in as Co-President of Guinea in his last years,” he wrote in a statement.
Ghana intends to renovate and preserve the residence as an act of respect, as well as efforts to preserve the country’s first President’s legacy and create a full experience for tourists to follow Nkrumah’s outstanding life from Ghana to Guinea.
“This landmark decision was conveyed to the Sékou Touré family on Saturday when Vice President, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang led us to visit the Sékou Touré family and also tour Nkrumah’s abandoned home after the investiture of President Mamady Doumbouya. “
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is negotiating the terms and conditions and engaging preservation experts for this important assignment. In the spirit of transparency and accountability, the Ghanaian public shall be fully apprised at every stage.”
Kwame Nkrumah moved to stay in Guinea in 1966 on the invitation of Sekou Toure, the first president of Guinea after a military coup that ousted his government.
Nkrumah’s arrival in Guinea marked a significant moment in his political career, as he was welcomed by Toure as the head of state and Secretary-General of the Guinean Democratic Party.
