Ghana Goes Tree Planting on Friday

The entire country led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will embark on a tree-planting exercise this Friday, June 7, 2024, as part of the fourth edition of the Green Ghana Day.

This edition is themed: “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow” and aims to root 10 million seedlings across the country.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor while elaborating on the theme said it was specially carved out to focus on sustainability, environmental conservation and future wellbeing.

“This theme will enable us to push boundaries to contribute to the global effort at tackling climate change to support our survival and the sustainability of planet earth.”

“We live in a time that the environmental challenges we face are increasingly urgent. Climate change, air pollution and the loss of biodiversity are issues that affect us all. One of the most immediate and effective actions we can take to combat these challenges is planting trees. Trees are the lungs of the planet vital to our survival and well-being,” he justified.

President Akufo-Addo will lead the national event at a commemorative tree planting at Nicholson Stadium at Burma Camp in Accra on Friday.

Hon Jinapor said out of the 10 million trees to be planted this year, six million will be planted in degraded forest reserves across the country while four million will be planted within and around farms, along degraded watershed areas and within communities.

Seedlings
According to the Minister, selected seedlings of timber trees, shade trees, ornamental trees, fruit trees and multi-purpose trees that will be suitable to the climate conditions in the various regions will be planted in the exercise with each region allotted a number of seedlings to be planted.

“As done in previous editions, we have a compartment for adoption by private institutions and we will brand them with their names and logos. Each compartment is 128 hectares which is about the size of 1,200 standard plots of 70ft/100ft.”

Seedlings can be collected from offices of the Ministry, Forestry Commission and various designated public places on Friday.
