Ghana Erred in Stripping Nananom of their Powers- Bawumia
Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is of the view that Ghana committed a blunder when it stripped traditional authorities of most of their powers in the Chieftaincy Act.
He intends to review and restore most of their powers when elected President of the Republic in the upcoming Presidential Elections.
He said this while standing before the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the Kumasi Traditional Council to seek blessings ahead of the elections slated for December 7, 2024.
The 2024 flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) said portions of the Chieftaincy Act passed in 2008 will be reviewed to involve chiefs in governance of the country.
“Ghana erred in stripping chiefs of their powers. They are no longer involved in governance and this is also breeding indiscipline. I will amend Section 63(d) when I come into power.”
Stick to Promises
The Kontire Division promised to hold him accountable if he failed to deliver on the promises he has made to chiefs upon election.
“The last time we met at the Regional House, you promised to support chiefs, restore our power of summon, restore our power of consent and cost of living allowance. All these will require boldness to implement. Make sure you do as you have said when you get power.”
The Oyoko Division on its part called for decentralization of government powers while the Nkosuo Division urged him to fulfil his promises when he gains the mandate.
“You have a good message and must stick to the promises when you get elected. We will always be here to hold you accountable when you fail.”
The Vice President alongside some NPP members and Executives were at the Manhyia Palace on June 12, 2024.
