Ghana Card Now “Internationally Acceptable For Travel”
Ghana’s National Identity Card popularly known as the Ghana Card has obtained international recognition as an electronic passport (E-passport) at airports across the globe.
This was confirmed by the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia after a “Key Ceremony” at the headquarters of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal Canada.
According to ICAO, with Wednesday’s Key Ceremony in Montreal, the Ghanacard becomes internationally acceptable for travel, and border control authorities can confirm in less than 10 seconds that the Ghana Card/e-passport was issued by the right authority, has not been altered, and is not a copied or cloned document, the veep said.
This implies that with the Ghana card, Ghanaians from any airport and any Diaspora Ghanaians will not require a visa to travel to Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia notes that within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) sub-region, the Ghana Card can be used to travel to any country, however, travelling outside ECOWAS will require the use of the normal biometric passport which will contain visas.
The government hopes that electronic visas will be issued under ICAO 2.0 protocols soon, which will enable the issuance of electronic visas on the Ghana Card under bilateral arrangements with other countries.
