Ghana and Zambia to Axe Visa Requirement

Ghana and Zambia have agreed to waive visa requirements for travel by their nationals.
This was announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on the sidelines of President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the country on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
The visa waiver would be a landmark outcome of the visit.
“We have also ensured that as a ministry, we are prioritising your smooth mobility and one of the major outcomes of this state visit, which you will hear President [John Dramani] Mahama talk about, is that for the first time in the history of Ghana-Zambia relations, we are going to have a free visa between our two countries so you no longer have to stress about visas.
“So we are going to have a visa waiver agreement. And it is one of the conditions that President Mahama gave us for this visit. He said, Foreign Minister, if you don’t make this happen, don’t join me on this visit.”
As part of the trip, President Mahama, accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Dramani Mahama, and other officials, will hold bilateral talks with President Hichilema on matters of mutual interest, including strengthening diplomatic relations, enhancing trade and investment cooperation, and exploring collaborative opportunities within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
He is also expected to lay a wreath at Embassy Park in Lusaka in honour of the Southern African nation’s fallen heroes.
