President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sworn into Office, the country’s 15th Chief Justice, Gertrude Araba Essaba Torkornoo.
This was during a short ceremony on June 12, five days after her parliamentary approval at the Jubilee House.
Present at the event were former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, immediate past Chief Justice, Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, Members of Parliament, Members of the Judicial Council, Clergymen, and others.
President Akufo-Addo in his speech said it wasn’t a difficult decision appointing her due to her distinction in line of service in the past nineteen years and asserted she is a worthy successor of Justice Anin-Yeboah
He further underscored the need for the Judiciary to command the respect of the people and therefore urged her to discharge her newly found role with deep-seated respect for the Rule of Law.
He also applauded the Judicial service and Justice Anin-Yeboah for their “admirable” gesture in supporting her during her vetting by parliament and urged them to continue with the support calling on the Bar and the Bench to join hands in making her reign successful.
Thanking the President for the appointment, Justice Torkonoo said it was with a deep sense of duty.
She also called for collaboration with the Legislature and Executive for the success of the Judiciary through adequate budgetary allocation.
