Galamsey Sites Shut Down in Duayaw Nkwanta

Illegal mining sites at Duayaw Nkwanta in the Tano North Municipality in the Ahafo Region have been shut down by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).
The intelligence-led operation, which took place on Monday, January 19, 2026, was used to flush out illegal miners polluting the River Bisi, a major tributary to the Tano River- a situation that has severely affected the livelihoods of residents of Egya Wuradu Kuro, Egya Antwi and Nana Etufuwaa Kuro.
As part of the operation, the Task Force completely raided the site, including the makeshift structures and logistics base that harbours the Galamseyers and their logistics.
Galamsey equipment at the site destroyed included 3 heavy-duty multipurpose water pumping machines, gold washing platforms, generators and washing pans.
Other items that were burned included a welding machine, a pumping machine, a fridge, a manual grease gun, an electronic grease gun, a gasoline engine washer, a starter, two sets of radios, two excavator batteries, one Hover, one Power Dorman machine, two brand new water hoses and two drums of diesel fuel.
Following the raids and complete closure of the galamsey sites, the task force further engaged some inhabitants of the affected communities, who are mostly farmers.
“The engagements were to gather more intelligence for future operations and most importantly to reassure the villagers of NAIMOS efforts to ensure the sustained elimination of environmental threats to rivers, farmlands and public infrastructure,” NAIMOS reported in a statement.
Meanwhile, the Director of Operations for NAIMOS has indicated that the Ahafo and Bono raids would be sustained to ensure that the Tano River and other smaller tributaries are restored for the broader good of the inhabitants and sustenance of Agriculture.
