Galamsey: Foreigners Deportation is a Free Ride Home- Kwaku Azar

Private legal practitioner Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare, popularly known as, Kwaku Azar, has criticized the government’s decision to deport all foreigners arrested for engaging in illegal mining, known as galamsey.
In a Facebook post, he described the new measure as a “free ride home”.
“Deportation is a free ride home.”
The lawyer rather proposed that such culprits be held accountable for the destruction their activities cause.
“Prosecute them, jail them, seize their assets, and compel them to restore the damaged land.”
The Minister for Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, last week, announced the new measure, noting that the government has no interest in putting criminal foreign nationals before a law court in the country to face the full rigours of the law.
Rather, he said the focus was to deport such culprits and ban them from returning to the country.
This decision has faced widespread criticism, yet it appears unlikely to reverse its stance.
It is believed that this will derail the fight against illegal mining by the government which has already been criticized as ineffective and devoid of commitment.
