Galamsey Fight: Police Investigate Death of Officer Who Drowned in Offin River

The Ghana Police Service has initiated investigations into the drowning of a police officer identified as Constable John Kwabena Dogbey during a galamsey clampdown on River Offin.

The officer met his untimely death on April 2, 2025, at Assin Domeabra in the Central Region.

A statement issued by the police said he was part of the Central North Regional Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce deployed for duty at Assin Domeabra.

He is said to have slipped and fallen into the Offin River while he was dismantling a Chanfan machine belonging to the illegal miners.

The body of the officer was recovered with the help of some divers after hours of intensive rescue efforts and conveyed to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Assin Foso where he was pronounced dead.

The body has since been conveyed to the Police Hospital’s morgue for preservation and autopsy.

“The Ghana Police Service is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of No. 63055 G/Constable John Kwabena Dogbey, which occurred on 2™ April. 2025, at Assin Domeabra in the Central Region,” the police statement read in part.

The Police Service further mourned the officer as it assured all needed assistance to the bereaved family to provide the needed support.

“May the soul of our departed colleague rest in perfect peace.”
