Free SHS Has Affected The Economy Negatively – MP Claims
Member of Parliament for Kintampo North and a Member of the Education Committee in Parliament, Hon. Joseph Kwame Kumah has claimed that, the Free Senior High School policy has affected the country’s economy negatively.
Speaking on Opemsuo radio’s Nkwantananso show with Agudey, the MP explained that, the government’s decision to make the policy absolutely free has unleashed some negative effects on the national economy.
He highlighted that, the numerous taxes placed on fuel and other commodities are a result of the huge expenditure of the free Senior High School causing prices of fuel to be rising day in and day out.
He divulged that is the fact on the grounds as revealed by His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during his visit to Memphis in the USA.
Hon. Kwame Kumah said, the policy is not bad but there are also enough vacancies to employ these huge numbers of graduates produced annually. The government must make parents take part of the responsibilities to relief it of the expenditure.
The MP added that, for this reason, the former President John Dramani Mahama introduced the progressive senior high school policy, to make facilities and materials available preparing for it bit by bit before progressively carrying the policy to the national level freely.
He disclosed that, it is against this background that the former president John Dramani Mahama put up a number of E-block buildings to expand the school’s capacity to admit and accommodate more students without difficulties.
