Four Chinese Illegal Miners Remanded

The four Chinese nationals have been remanded into police custody after they were arrested in connection to illegal mining at Atatam, in the Adansi Asokwa District of the Ashanti Region.

Li Quan (44), Lu Jianzheng (36), Li Xuyu (47), and Su Shanxing (63) were arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court on July 1, 2025.

They will reappear before the court on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The foreigners were arrested in an operation conducted along targeted illegal mining sites along the Subin River and Jimi River- both of which serve as crucial sources of drinking water for adjoining communities.

According to a police statement, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command and the Minerals Development Fund (MDF) led by Dr Hanna Bisiw, Chief Executive Officer, spearheaded the operation.

Meanwhile, seven excavators and four pump-action guns were also retrieved from the illegal mining site.
