Five Custom Officers Suspended

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has suspended five officers of the Customs Division following the diversion of a consignment of transit cargo declared for onward movement to Niger.
In a statement, the Authority stated that preliminary findings indicated potential procedural breaches that require further independent and comprehensive examination.
“The decision follows preliminary findings arising from an enforcement operation conducted on February 18, 2026, involving a consignment of transit cargo declared for onward movement to Niger. The operation revealed discrepancies in documentation and compliance with established transit procedures, prompting a detailed internal review,” the statement said.
The investigation will determine the full facts, including the extent of any individual involvement and departures from established Customs protocols.
It noted that additional officers may be invited to assist with the investigation where necessary, and upon conclusion of the process, appropriate administrative action will be taken in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
“GRA wishes to assure all stakeholders and the general public that this action reflects a commitment to protect national revenue, growth of local industries and promote overall economic development.”
It further affirmed the commitment to ensure all revenue collection and enforcement procedures are executed with the highest standards of professionalism and accountability.
Background
The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) last week intercepted 12 articulated trucks loaded with 44,055 packages of edible cooking oil, tomato paste and spaghetti with an estimated actual tax value of about GH¢85 million along the Dawhenya–Tema Road.
The 12 trucks are believed to be part of a consignment of 18 articulated trucks that had been electronically gated out of the Customs system as transit goods and declared as goods in transit from Akanu, destined for Niger through Kulungugu.
However, the trucks were intercepted while moving without the mandatory Customs human escort, in breach of Ghana’s transit procedures.
Investigation is ongoing to identify the six outstanding trucks.
