Firefighters Attacked by Public While Dousing a Bus Fire

Some angry individuals have attacked personnel of the Ghana National Fire Services (GNFS) while responding to a vehicular fire along the Aflao-Kumasi route.

According to a statement issued by GNFS, the rear of a KIA bus with registration number AC 1229-24 ignited into flames along its journey on January 28.

Personnel received a call about the fire at 17:19 and arrived at the scene at 17:23.

They set out to deploy water to bring the situation under control at 1735 hours and encountered an attack from the public while they tried applying foam- a critical firefighting agent- to fully extinguish.

“During the firefighting operation, some uninformed bystanders heckled and obstructed the firefighters, attempting to seize firefighting equipment while filming and making baseless accusations against them.”

It indicated that the “reckless” interference disrupted the crew’s efforts.

The service while condemning the action said it has the propensity to delay fire suppression efforts, increase damage and risk to lives and properties; endanger both firefighters and the public; create confusion and disorder, make response efforts very difficult; and disrupt the proper use of firefighting techniques.

“The Service urges the public to respect professional firefighters and refrain from crowding emergency scenes, as this obstructs them in the performance of their lawful duties.”

According to the Service, the fire was totally put out at 19:50.
