Fire Service Warns against Car Fuel Tank Overfilling
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has warned drivers against overfilling fuel tanks.
The Service observes that attempts to overfill cause drivers to rock their vehicles while refuelling is in progress.
In an educational post, it said overfilling eliminates the fuel tank’s safety air space; forces fuel into systems not designed for liquid; and creates fire, health, mechanical, and environmental risks.
“Stop filling when the pump clicks off,” it cautioned, affirming that overfilling is unsafe, costly, and unnecessary.
Below are the risks:
* It can cause fuel spillage, which makes the area slippery and dangerous.
* Spilt fuel can easily catch fire when it comes into contact with heat or sparks.
* Fuel fumes are harmful and can cause headaches, dizziness, or nausea.
* It can damage the vehicle’s fuel system, leading to expensive repairs.
* It pollutes the environment, contaminating air, soil, and water.
* You waste fuel and money when fuel overflows.
