Finance Ministry Discredits Measure to Track Cargos
The Ministry of Finance has discredited reports that it has introduced a new policy into the shipping sector requiring shippers to obtain electronic Cargo Transit numbers.
Referencing a “fake” letter communicating the information, the Ministry said it did not sanction it.
It said its attention was drawn to the letter by persons in the sector.
“The letter alleged that as of 15th September 2023, all shipments to Ghana, including transit shipment are required to obtain an Electronic Cargo Transit number (ECTN/SPN) and submit same to Antaser Afrique BVBA for verification,” a statement from the Ministry said.
The said letter directed all shippers to get and submit an Electronic Cargo Transit number (ECTN/SPN) to Antaser Afrique BVBA for verification.
It furthered, “The Ministry wishes to inform all shippers and stakeholders that the letter and its content are fake and should be ignored.”
It also thanked the whistleblowers for drawing its attention.
“We thank all stakeholders who alerted us and made enquiries and wish to assure them that, as is done with all policies, extensive consultation will be done with relevant stakeholders whenever the government wishes to introduce a new policy or tax.”
