Even Corpses Will Pay The ¢1 Fuel Levy – Suhum MP

The Member of Parliament for Suhum Constituency, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, has assessed the extensive nature of the newly imposed ¢1 fuel levy by the Mahama administration.

In his estimation, it will affect every Ghanaian whether living or dead.

According to him, not even death can spare one from contributing to the levy which is projected to rake GH¢5.7 billion annually.

“Fire determines the quality of a cassava. Mahama has scrapped the E-levy which taxed just 1.5% and has replaced it with E-levy on petrol. Everyone will be affected by this tax. Even the corpse which is being transported to the morgue will pay some. Even if you die, you will pay. Such is a bad government.”

The bill for the levy was presented and approved by parliament on June 3, 2025, with the government justifying that the action was necessary to cover an estimated US$1.8 billion required to finance fuel procurement for uninterrupted thermal power generation in the coming months.

It has, however, acknowledged the burden this will place on households and businesses.

Meanwhile, President Mahama does not expect the levy to result in immediate fuel price increases at the pump due to the recent gains in macro stability and the strengthening of the Ghana cedi.
