EOCO Dismisses Road Contract Corruption Allegations by Prof Adei

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has dismissed as unsubstantiated, allegations of corruption in the award of contracts to contractors by the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

It comes after an investigation was initiated into the allegations which were made six months ago by Professor Stephen Adie, a former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA).

In a statement, the Ministry of Roads said the investigation has been concluded with the outcome submitted.

“EOCO has concluded its investigations. EOCO has determined that ‘From the totality of the available information to the office, Prof. Stephen Adei’s comments were found to be unfortunate and general within the context of perceived corruption in the country.’”

Citing the reports, the Ministry said the allegations were found “unsubstantiated and highly presumptuous”.

It added, “The Ministry is fully satisfied with the outcome of the investigation and wishes to reiterate its commitment to transparency and due process in the award of contracts.”

Prof Adei in an interview in October 2023 claimed persons seeking road contracts are told: “Road contracts will be given to you, provided you pay 1 million upfront….”

The Ministry of Roads headed at the time by Hon Kwasi Amoako Atta in response to this expressed utmost surprise and petitioned the EOCO to probe the allegations saying the allegations bordered on the “commission of crime against the Republic”.
