Enable Gas Supply through Anwomaso Pipeline for Stable Power; Asantehene to Govt

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the government to enable gas supply through the Kumasi Pipeline PPO2 at Anwomaso to operationalize the 250 MW Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant.
During a courtesy visit by the Minister for Energy, Hon John Jinapor, on Monday, Otumfuo said the move will help meet rising demand for power in the Ashanti Region.
His Majesty commissioned the gas pipeline in April 2024 for the transmission of natural gas from western Ghana to the plant; however, the then government failed to operationalize it.
Erratic Power Supply
The Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency whose visit was on the back of recent erratic power supply in the region, was received at the Asanteman Council meeting on March 17, 2025.
In his submission, Hon Jinapor attributed the crisis to increasing demand in the region as well as defective transmission network.
In response to the demand, he said a 145MVA transformer has been installed by the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) to double capacity.
“The power in Kumasi and Ashanti Region has been unstable for quite a while due to the expansion. Demand continues to increase. GRIDCo has brought in a 145MVA transformer to replace the 63MVA. This means the capacity has been doubled for a stable power supply. There were a lot of challenges while migrating onto the new one, but it’s almost done. From tonight, there will be stability.”
He continued, “We have excess capacity to export to Burkina, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo for profit. The challenge is distribution. We have enough generation to meet demand but the transmission network is faulty which we seek to resolve.”
Gas Supply
In his remarks, the Occupant of the Golden Stool referred to the Anwomaso gas pipeline and urged the necessary authorities to operationalize it.
“Enable gas supply at Anwomaso for stable power supply. The VRA must enable the gas supply.”
Otumfuo believes that its operationalization will reduce the cost of energy within the region.
The Minister was led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Frank Amoakohene and accompanied by the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Julius Kpekpena, the Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, the Chief Executive Officer Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Mark Awuah Baah, the Ashanti Regional Council of State Representative, Yaw Obimpeh, and other officials.
