Elmina Sharks’ Jay Asamoah Kola Charged For Assaulting a Referee

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has charged Elmina Sharks midfielder Jay Asamoah Kola for allegedly assaulting a referee after their 1-0 defeat to Swedru All Stars on Sunday.

A video of the incident which has gone viral showed the player and others attempting to attack Eso Doh Morrison, the officiating referee for Matchday 17 Access Bank Division One League while making his way to the tunnel.

Jay is later captured grabbing sand and throwing it at the referee while some police officers tried protecting him from his attackers.

In a notice, the GFA said Jay had been charged with breaching Section 12(1)(k) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, 2019.

“The player is alleged to have assaulted a match official of the said game. “

He has until Tuesday, February 18, 2025, to respond to the charges.

This incident has yet again shed light on the magnitude of the hooliganism in the country’s local football.

It comes only three weeks after a football fan was stabbed to death in Nsoatre after a game between Asante Kotoko SC and Nsoatreman FC.
