El-Wak Stampede: Families of the Dead to Receive ₵100k Compensation from Gov’t

The government of Ghana has announced ₵100,000 compensation for each of the families of the six females who died in the El-Wak Stadium stampede last month.

In addition, the government committed to supporting each family with  GH₵50,000 for funeral expenses.

This was officially communicated to the families by the Deputy Minister for Defence, Brogya Genfi, during a meeting on December 1, 2025, ahead of the funeral of the victims.

According to the Ministry, they have also been assured of the government’s solidarity throughout the difficult period.

It further reported that the family had been advised to present immediate family members—specifically siblings of the deceased—for replacement opportunities in the military.

“In situations where there is no qualified person within the immediate family, the families may nominate a suitable candidate from the extended family.”

Meanwhile, the Minister disclosed that the injured victims will join their colleagues on the training grounds after recovery.

“The Ministry of Defence, together with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, is also putting in place measures to support the children left behind by the deceased,” it added.

The stampede occurred on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.
