Egypt Sack Head Coach Rui Vitória
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has sacked the head coach of the Egyptian senior national team, Rui Carlos Pinho da Vitória, following their knockout from the 2023 Nations Cup.
The Portuguese’s dismissal was announced on February 4, after the FA perused the technical and administrative reports on the team’s participation in the African Nations Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.
In a statement, the FA said, “Following its meeting today to discuss the technical and administrative reports regarding the national team’s participation in the 2023 African Nations Championship in Côte d’Ivoire 2023, decided to thank the Portuguese Rui Vitoria, the coach of the Egyptian national team, and his assistant staff while studying the biographies of foreign coaches and presenting them at the next meeting.”
In the stead of the 53-year-old, the FA has appointed former player Mohamed Youssef as the interim head coach of the first team.
He will continue in the position until a foreign technical director is selected and the rest of the staff is formed, a statement by the FA said.
The highly rated seven-time AFCON Champions were a shadow of themselves in the tournament as they drew in all three group games against Mozambique, Ghana and Cape Verde.
They were knocked out in the Round of 16 by DR Congo with an 8-7 win on penalties after the teams finished 1-1 after extra time.
