Eduwatch Holds Govt Accountable Over Accommodation For Teachers Promise

Africa Education Watch (Eduwatch) is holding the government to its promise to provide accommodation for basic schoolteachers across the country.
It comes after the education think tank realised ongoing procurement for basic schools in every district without the element of accommodation.
“These projects are being funded from 10 percent of the DACF, as approved by Parliament and directed by Cabinet. Surprisingly, there is no teacher accommodation component in the procurement documents sighted so far; neither are we aware of any financial allocation,” the Executive Director, Mr Kofi Asare, said in a statement on October 6, 2025.
He emphasised the need for the government, particularly President Mahama, to honour his word.
“The President was clear in his promise that every basic school built under his administration would include accommodation for teachers.”
He highlighted the deep impact of the lack of proper housing for teachers under the current circumstances.
“Without decent housing, teachers will keep rejecting postings to deprived schools, worsening PTR and learning outcomes, and deepening the already existing rural-urban divide in basic education quality and access. The President must walk the talk on his teacher accommodation promise.”
In July, President Mahama announced an order to include teacher accommodations alongside the classroom blocks to ensure teachers have proper living facilities, enhancing their ability to focus on their teaching responsibilities.
Under an affordable housing project known as “low-cost housing” to make it more accessible to teachers, especially those in lower income brackets, President Mahama underscored the government’s plans to allocate a budget for a fund that will support the construction of these homes.
