ECOWAS Condemns Attempted Coup In Guinea Bissau
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has condemned the alleged attempt to disrupt constitutional rule in Guinea Bissau last week.
In a statement, the West African bloc expressed its solidarity with the people and authorities of Guinea-Bissau and called for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
“ECOWAS strongly condemns the violence and all attempts aimed at disrupting the constitutional order and the rule of law in Guinea-Bissau.
“ECOWAS also calls for the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of these incidents, in accordance with the law.”
An exchange of gunfire between some rebellious military men and the country’s security forces broke out in the capital of Bissau on Thursday night through to Friday morning, after the former reportedly tried to free two imprisoned officials in the country to no avail.
President Umaro Sissoco Embaló linked the attack to a coup.
