ECG: Afenyo-Markin Denies Wereko-Brobbey’s Allegations

Former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has contested allegations linking his leadership to revenue losses by the Company.

In a statement, he noted that the claims by the former CEO of the Volta River Authority, Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobbey, are “misleading, unsupported, and factually inaccurate”.

According to him, the losses under reference weren’t incurred during his tenure.

“I was not the Chairman of the ECG Board in 2023, as Dr. Wereko-Brobbey suggested. I was appointed by His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on 16th July 2024 and officially sworn in as Board Chairman of ECG on 17th July 2024. The first board meeting I presided over was on 26th September 2024, and my tenure lasted approximately six months, ending in January 2025.”

Under his leadership, he said he spearheaded several reforms aimed at streamlining ECG’s operations, reducing losses and improving revenue efficiency.

Among the reforms, he said, was in procurement and contract management; implementation of the Loss Reduction Programme, particularly those arising from obsolete and malfunctioning meters; modernisation of ECG’s metering infrastructure, expanding prepaid metering coverage and closing the loopholes that enabled non-technical losses; and historic cumulative payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

“These were all part of my broader vision to tackle the systemic structural inefficiencies at ECG—a vision that was fully endorsed by former President Akufo-Addo.”

He further challenged Dr. Wereko-Brobbey to present evidence to his claims if he has any.

“If you possess evidence to substantiate your claims, I challenge you to present it publicly. Until then, I will remain focused on advocating for non-partisan reforms at ECG that deliver value to the Ghanaian people through improved service delivery and greater efficiency in the energy sector.”
