Dumsor Not Due to Generation Capacity but Transmission Faults – Energy Minister
The Minister for Energy, John Jinapor, says the power situation in the country is not related to generation capacity but transmission.
According to him, the transmission networks are defective and the cause of the erratic power supply the country faces occasionally.
Standing before the Asantehene during a courtesy visit on March 17, 2025, he urged residents of the Ashanti Region to exercise patience as his outfit works to put them in good shape.
“I plead with the residents of Kumasi and Asanteman to bear with us. We are trying to improve what we inherited from the previous administration. As we speak, we are not shedding load. We have excess capacity to export to Burkina, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo for profit. The challenge is distribution. We have enough generation capacity to meet demand, but the transmission network is faulty which we seek to resolve.”
One of the measures the government has put in place to improve power stability in the region, he said, was the installation of a 145MVA transformer.
“Power supply in Kumasi and Ashanti Region has been unstable for quite a while due to the expansion. Demand continues to increase. GRIDCo has brought in a 145MVA transformer to replace the 63MVA. This means the capacity has been doubled for a stable power supply. There were a lot of challenges while migrating to the new one but it’s almost done. From tonight, there will be stability.”
The Minister was led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon Frank Amoakohene and accompanied by the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Julius Kpekpena, the Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, the Chief Executive Officer Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), Mark Awuah Baah, the Ashanti Regional Council of State Representative, Yaw Obimpeh, and other officials.
