Democracy Cup Postponed
The game between Asante Kotoko Sporting Club and Accra Hearts of Oak marking the maiden edition of the J.D.F Annan Democracy Cup has been rescheduled.
A brief notice from the Porcupines on Monday announced the game will no longer take place on Friday, July 5, 2024, as earlier planned.
The game organised in honour of the country’s democracy by parliament has been rescheduled to July 17.
“The Democracy Cup match against Hearts of Oak has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 17th 2024,” a post by Kotoko read.
The decision for the changes was, however not relayed.
Already, the two teams have begun preparations for the game. Hearts resumed training on June 24 while Kotoko began just three days ago. The Porcupines have also held friendlies as part of preparations.
The one-off game will take place on the home grounds of the Phobians.
The winner will earn an opportunity to play against the United States of America-based club, DC United, in Washington later in the year.
The competition was launched on Thursday, June 13, 2024, by Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who seeks to leverage on sports to preach democracy and its preservation.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Simon Okraku pledged his support for it, stating football has its own role in governance.
“I hope that the new baby, the Democracy Cup, will be the platform that will help us towards achieving our targeted mission as a nation. I commit the support of the Football Association to this worthy cause. I also hope that we give space to our beautiful ladies to be active members of this product.”
He believes this will be replicated in the sub-region and Africa since it champions a good cause.
“Democracy is what we need! Democracy has come to stay and democracy has to be cemented. And if it is that football can play a part, the Football Association will stand shoulder to shoulder with the Parliament of Ghana to deliver another masterstroke.”
