David Silva Confronts Sad Day As He Retires

Former Manchester City Star David Silva has announced his retirement from professional football following a crucial injury last week.

The former captain of City said in a pre-recorded video on Thursday that it was a sad day for him.

“Today is a sad day for me. Today, it is the time to say goodbye to what I have dedicated my whole life to…Today, it is time to say goodbye to my colleagues who are like family to me. I will miss you very much.”

He also acknowledged fans of his former clubs including Valencia, Eibar, Celta Vigo, Manchester City and Real Sociedad saying, “Thank you because you made me feel at home.”

He was reported to have sustained a knee injury during a training session forcing him to undergo some tests which revealed a cruciate ligament injury.

“David Silva had to leave yesterday’s training session due to discomfort in his left knee. In the imaging tests performed, an anterior cruciate ligament injury was observed. At this moment it is pending to be evaluated by a specialist, something that will take place next week,” a statement from Real Sociedad said.

During his successful spell with the Citizens, Silva made 309 appearances scoring 60 goals with 93 assists. He won four Premier League titles with City.

The 37-year-old began his career in Valencia and later joined Eibar and Celta Vigo on loan before completing a transfer to City in 2010 where he remained until 2020.

With Spanish side Sociedad, Silva had just four seasons to spare.

His passing ability and possession-retaining qualities earned him the nicknames Merlin with reference to the legendary wizard Merlin and El Mago from his teammates and fans.
