Cybersecurity Breach at MTN Ghana Triggers Multi-Agency Investigation

The Cybersecurity Authority (CSA) of Ghana, the National Communication Authority (NCA) and the Data Protection Commission (DPC) are preparing to investigate the cybersecurity breach at MTN Ghana.
Six days ago, MTN informed customers about a cybersecurity incident that resulted in unauthorised access to the personal information of some MTN customers in certain markets.
The incident is said to have affected about 5,700 MTN customers.
In a statement, the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations said the relevant state agencies have been tasked to determine the extent of the breach and ensure that necessary measures are taken to protect customer data.
Urging customers to remain calm, the Ministry said it was working to establish if there are any breaches on the part of the Mobile Network Operator.
“The Ministry is working closely with the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the National Communications Authority (NCA) and the Data Protection Commission (DPC) to investigate the potential breach.”
It assured that the affected customers will be contacted in line with Data Protection Laws.
Meanwhile, MTN in its statement said its core network, billing systems and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully operational.
