Curbing Illegal Mining: Queen Mother Urges Gov’t to Step Up Efforts
Queen Mother of the Denyase Traditional Area, Nana Adutwumwaa Bonin III, is urging the government through the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry to step up their efforts in the fight against illegal mining largely referred to as ‘GALAMSAY’ in local parlance.
Activities of illegal miners in recent times have gained notoriety and triggered national dialogue due to its negative impact on the natural resources. There has been a clarion call on the government to intensify the fight against the menace.
The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in his last closing remarks at the Asanteman Traditional Council last year, charged his Chiefs to be actively involved in the fight against illegal mining to save the environment.
Speaking to Opemsuo News on illegal mining, Nana Adutwumwaa was particularly concerned about the hazardous impact of the activities of illegal mining in her traditional area and hence called on the government to intervene.
“Politicians should help and do whatever they can and do things right especially when it comes to the galamsay menace. I will plead with the government that it is still going on in my area (Denyase) and it needs to be stopped urgently”.
She added “our forefathers and ancestors fought so hard to preserve our river bodies and forests for us and we have the responsibility to protect it and not to destroy them with galamsay activities so that we can make the most out of them”.
She further called on traditional leaders to also be actively involved and do their best to teach their subjects to be patriotic and support the development of their own communities.
