CPA Threatens Legal Action Against PURC Over Tariff Hike
The Executive Director of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Nana Prempeh Okogyeabour, has stated that legal action will be taken against the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) if it fails to review its recent tariff hike.
In an interview with George Adjei on NKwantannanso on May 17, Mr Okogyeabour expressed the CPA’s intention to write a letter to PURC and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo regarding the recent electricity tariffs increase.
“We will just wait for their response, and if it is reasonable, CPA will not act further. But if we do not get a favourable response, we will seek legal action or demonstrate on the streets,” he asserted.
He emphasised that the core duty of PURC is to protect the interests of consumers and providers of utility services. However, he criticised PURC for seemingly prioritising the industry over the well-being of consumers.
He further lamented the lack of quality monitoring assessments by PURC, stating, “All PURC does is increase prices.”
Mr. Okogyeabour urged Ghanaians to support the CPA in its fight for fairer tariffs.
